Hi, I'm new here. I'm in a bit of a state and really need some advice. We've got two kittens from seperate litters (one who is 7 months and one who is about 4 1/2 months)
They are best friends!
The 4 1/2 month old, Max, we got about a month ago from a advert a lady posted online. She seemed really genuine but when we got there we saw that he had only a small tail (about an inch) and as we were in the car on the way home noticed that he had a 'cold'.
We took him to the vets the next morning where she diagnosed Cat Flu and gave us some antibiotics for him. We asked about his tail and she said it wasn't a problem and that his mum may have bit it off by accident when he was born. She checked him over fully and assured us that the only problem he had was cat flu and that the antibiotics would clear it.
A week later he was still poorly so I took him to a different vets for a second opinion, she again said it was cat flu so prescribed a different dose of antibiotics and some powder to help clear his mucous.
Neither of these vets mentioned that there was any possibility that he had anything else wrong with him. We got him pet insurance 2 days after we got him so just after he'd seen the first vet who diagnosed him with cat flu.
Yesterday he was still unwell after the second dose of antibiotics so we took him to the second vets but to see a different vet at the practice. To our horror he said that we should test him for FIV! Something that we hadn't even entertained until now! He tested him and it came back with a faint positive line (which he assures us means that he definitely has it) but he has sent another blood sample off to a lab for thorough testing!
This is a massive shock but even worse, the vet said that the FIV won't be covered on our insurance as he was ill when we got him! Does anyone know where I stand on this? When we got him he was diagnosed with CAT FLU not FIV! He's only been diagnosed yesterday by which point we've had the insurance long enough to cover new conditions! Is he right in saying that FIV will be classed as a pre-existing condition even though we had no idea of it when we took out the insurance policy? Does anyone have any similar experiences? He is insured with Animal Friends if that helps and he has the highest level of cover!
Sorry to ramble on but just looking for some advice
Thank you!
