Pets I own: Rosie a Maine Coon, Red and Cream.Aged 4 year in (May2014), a BIG quiet girl, and TiaMaria a Black Russian years on (Nov 2013) who is amazing fun.
Sadly Tia was killed in July 2014 by a car.
My son has Parkinsons and lives 2 miles from me. I got him RILEY a black stray 2year old in February 2014, but from a rescue 14 months ago.Very involved with him !
Pebbles age unknown, thrown out of a car, went to my daughter. Also involved with him ! ALL are adorable and so different.
Now (OCT 2014) have a kitten called Lilyana. She looks like her Mum, a Russian Blue. Her Dad is a Rag Doll. She was born on 24/07/2014....the day my darling Tia was killed on the road.
This was meant to be and she is helping me grieve for Tia. Lilyana is delightful.Rosie is now taking to her

The Scams I am talking about refer to PUPPIES AND KITTENS After loosing my Tia, a Black Russian cat I visited a breeder recommended by the Russian Blue and Abyssinian Society, she had lovely, well cared for kittens but I did not somehow take to the kitten. It was just too soon after loosing my girl, but this was a good breeder based in the N of England. I found only two breeders in Scotland but they had boys only and Rosie is used to girls. Most breeders were very far from me, mostly in England. again there were none suitable available in the NE and NW. One advert showed Russian Blues of the highest standard. They emailed me details which were very full. They asked all sorts of sensible questions about me and my home. The price was £265.I asked where they were based and he said he moved recently to The Isle Of Man as his wife had kidney trouble and was receiving treatment there. I offered to fly there but he said he could have the kitten I chose freighted to me.He said to pick one from the photos. I then asked for his permission to phone his vet. He responded by saying I should phone this mobile number. That was on a Sunday. I don't know of any vet who gives out that. I asked him to give me their DoB and a copy of the pedigree. He said "As I told you, they are 12 weeks old and the paperwork is sent with them." I asked for the name of the Vets surgery in IoM and their landline phone number. No response. Called IoM Police who said the address given does not exist and that people with kidney trouble had to go to the mainland. The mobile number her gave was not an IoM number, but was on the mainland. He added that recent scams said to come from the Island were for boxer puppies. Also suspicious was the price. A top quality pedigree sells from £450 , sometimes a little more. How could you sell one at that price including freight if they were of the standard shown ? A week later I had someone else contact me showing a photo of 10 Russian Blue kittens sitting in a row. I recognised them as belonging to a legitimate breeder, whom I informed. She warned me NOT to phone any number given as many of the scams were from Nigeria and would run up an enormous bill. Then chap no 1 Came back on using a different name, female now, and different photos, but the exact same wording as he used when saying he was in IoM.This time he wanted £600. Although I travelled a round trip of 230 miles to that first legit breeder and would NEVER buy without seeing the kittens and doing loads of checks, I have now been put off doing it.I WAs willing to travel up to 500 miles ! I will go to Cat Shows in Scotland and recontact the two Scottish breeders. I will now also consider a boy too. PLEASE pass this on to ANYONE who is starting to look for a puppy or a kitten.

If more people where as enlightened as you tiarosie, this kind of scamming would disappear. However, most people are either too impatient or too gullible thus keeping the badly bred/illegally imported pet trade going. But it is, in the end, they, who suffer. Financially and emotionally.

Well I am 70 with a birthday coming soon ! My dad lived to 95 years and was very smart. He also used a computer even though he was blind. Unlikely either of us would be scammed. I don't think it is an age thing really, just that not everyone is very bright and can be gullable. Pets bring out your emotions, and smart scammers can sound so sincere and say all the right things. The Police said they target Scotland as there are less breeders around. But the rest of the UK gets it too. If people are disabled, or have health or age problems and are unable to travel, they are most likely to be targets.People without transport would be tempted. Yes, lazy young people will buy "Mail Order" but nobody deserves to be taken advantage of like this. The loss of the money is bad, but it would have cost more in heartache. I would have felt really low and probably have lost confidence in myself too.

How shocking!! I'm glad that you were suspicious and looked into it. There's some awful people out there. I know you will find a genuine one soon - just remember, whatever happens, you are getting nearer getting your kitten. I know when I was looking for a Maine Coon kitten you could get a list of breeders from the Maine Coon Cat Club. Is there a Russian Blue/Black Cat Club?

I'm so sorry you're having so much trouble finding the right kitten for you tiarosie and well done for recognising that they were attempting to scam you. Also glad you didn't just ignore it but followed up with the IoM police & the breeder whose photos had been used. Getting a pet is an emotional time & people can be easy prey, whatever their age, often for the same reason, inexperience. The young from inexperience of the world & older people from their inexperience of the technologies involved, although that last one at least is reducing in numbers as time progresses due to people's exposure to technology & its pitfalls when younger. Sadly we all need to be more & more alert to the various ways we can be scammed, online or otherwise. I really hope you can find the right cat for you & Rosie.

My mother had all her marbles up to her passing away at 90,young people working in the care home where she stayed for her last 18months came to her to work out maths questions, spellings, etc, and got to grips with decimalisation and metrication long before anyone else, she loved a challenge. When she was ill,I promised when she got better I would bring my net book for her to have a go on,I'm sure she would have shown me a thing or two,ha ha.She never needed to use a knitting pattern, and could look closely at a design and worked it out in her head,I never understood how she managed to knit the most beautiful things from jumpers to fine baby shawls without a pattern.I have to use a paper clip to avoid loosing myself in a complicated pattern.Young or old, some people are foolish, some amazingly stupid (as in older women thinking local young men they meet while on holiday abroad really have fallen for them and even part with their life savings)but many are very savvy. Why some older people get taken in at times is because they come from an age were people could leave doors unlocked and not be burgled, and think people are as honest as they are. Professional criminals can be very convincing as their art is well practised and perfected, and take advantage of some elderly people who may be very frail so even afraid of them.I am quite protective so keep an eye on elderly neighbours when people are round knocking on doors.

There are so many swindlers that makes you suspicious. I am nearly 78 and had to buy Tommie and Tosha on internet as I'm mostly housebound. Cannot drive further than 5 km. I checked the reviews and found the persons on facebook Paid half the costs and the rest when the cats were delivered with their passport. They signed a paper that, if the cats had an illness not mentioned or not recognized, that they could go back. I'd never return them for that reason of course, but then I knew if I could trust them. More or less.

dutchkitties, I had a knee replacement 2 months ago so cannot drive far and still get very tired if I do too much. Although I was willing to travel, especially to fly, at an early stage in the conversation with the scammer, I was a bit tempted, which is when I started to ask deeper questions, but I rememer all too well that short period when I was tempted to go down that line !

What a horrible experience for you Tiarosie. Scammers should be locked up and the key thrown away. Had a look on line and found 2 places you could try, if you haven't already. No good at putting links up but one is Russian Blue Breeders Association and the other is Russian and Abysinnian Cat Club of Scotland. I used the Maine Coon list when I got my Ted so hopefully one of them might have a breeder you can trust on. Good luck in your search and hopefully you will soon have your little fur baby. June.x.

Hi June, I have contacted both and will only buy from their breeders. I bought Rosie by via The Maine Coon Society but she was not well socialised and as a result has always been timerous with other people and very jumpy at the smallest thing.Tia was a people cat. Very outgoing. That is what I want in another cat. Hi Spider, I feel you are right. There will be the right kitten for me but I won't rush into it. I will put a post on when I find my new baby.
