Well so far we've had ours done annually. However, Buddy only had puppy course and first booster before we lost him When we got Jasper he'd only had his puppy course and no more. We got him at 5 so got him done then, and had his booster again last year. However, this year I'm going to see if the vets will titre test to see whether he actually needs the vac's again and if not I probably won't do it this year again.

Gypsy DID come over to the new forum, but has been VERY quiet: she's posted only four times! If you click on 'Members' at the top of the page (just under the titles) it lists all members and how many times they have posted etc.

Well my late dogs always had their boosters ever year same with Sindy, she is due to visit the vet next week for her annual boosterit as to be kept upto date because she stays at the cattery when we go on our hols. Same with Riley he has just completed his puppy vaccinations but i will ensure he gets his annual boosters and any other vaccinations he may need. I think it is very important to keepupto date with annual boosters.

My two boys have had their Kennel Cough boosters done twice and that was because they went into kennels for 1 week while we were abroad (no one else would look after them into their home and we don't like leaving them in the house and depending on friends to feed and walk them because we are not sure they will get it) however we will never put our dogs in kennels again, their behaviour changed, they started to become a little mischievous and snappy towards other dogs for a few weeks but their fine now (this was a couple year ago now). Also welcome back candy - Good to see you, Gypsy is on the forum but only comes on now and then (I think).

Thanks candy. I was just being nosy. I told friend I would leave for 2 seasons but she was going to get it done before the first but the ickle dog came into season 2 weeks before the op. I think that it great. I just wondered if it would be best to leave for after the second too?? As for having yearly jabs before op I would probably leave it till she has recovered after the op. But that's just my personal thoughts??

Depends on the dog. I personally think all dogs should be physically mature before being spayed. This means that larger dogs especially those prone to joint issues should in my opinion be older when neutered. I have done both of mine between the first and second seasons. The benefits of reducing mammary cancer in some breeds reduces with the more seasons the dog has! Best to talk to vet with their opinion on when is best for your dog, breed etc. You always spay 1/2 way between seasons so that the hormones are at their lowest. This limits the window of when the spaying can happen. It takes quite a while to recover fully from the operation so I guess it depends when the jabs are due and how long your vets allow before they insist you start the vaccination program from the start again!! Good luck with your choices Candy

So caz do you think between the first and second is ok? So is the average season every 6 months? So 3 months after the first season to get done? candy just reading cazs post, I completely forgot about - if the length of time between the yearly jabs is to long you might have to start the whole course again?!? Are they due before the op or just after?

Depends on age of dog when it has first season, if the 1st season is early then I would wait to do between 2nd and 3rd. If 1st season is late then between 1st and 2nd is fine. Its physical and mental maturity which is the important thing.
Cant remember now if its 3 months from start or 3 months from end of the season for the spaying. Seasons range in length, small breeds usually is close to the 6 months but my mums first golden who was not spayed was every 9+ months.
When to spay can be all breed specific. Everyone needs to investigate their own breeds or take vets advice.
I read a scientific paper (which I cant find at the moment) about when to spay a Golden and there is a window when its best to do it where you keep the risk of mammary cancers low but also don't increase the risk of cruciate ligament and joint issues by spaying too early (for golden only advice at the time I spayed was between 1st and 3rd season). There are pro sides to neutering but there is obvious downsides too.

Caz I agree with you... that's what I found when looking for advice.... wait till dog physically mature before spaying... Candy at 2years old now just had her 2nd season.... so its worked out fine for me I am now happy to get her spayed now shes older... ..... All I can say is get all the advice you can... I found no 2 vets gave the SAME ADVICE which makes it hard for us to know what is the best thing to do.... ..... Gladys.... As for jabs Candys are due before her op date .... haven't spoke to vet yet but I feel I may wait till after op ..... ARRRRRRR ..... worry worry worry....
