Sausage has been hurting for the last few days, barely moving from his bed and off his food. I took him to the vets and apart from the problems with his legs he was fine, with a strong steady heart beat. The bad news is that to control the aches he has been put on Metacam for the rest of his life, seeing the vet every three months to make sure that it is not having any adverse affects on him. The very bad news is that the vet charged me £22.14 for the Metacam. A quick visit to 'pet drugs online' confirmed that I'd been stitched up as they are charging £7.50 for the same size bottle. I think I am going to get a prescription for the next bottle. The treatment already seems to be working, he is currently curled up in front of the fire with Wilf. Bless.

Lovely cats. Please be careful with Metacam. Of course many cats take it for life with no side effects but the regular check-up is a good idea. The key thing for you to be careful with is dosage because it has such a narrow safety margin. Weigh Sausage regularly and make sure that you do not overdose. Some vets will not caution you enough about this; an extra bit for good luck is not OK. Of course, if you order it online make sure it has the right concentration. The feline product is a 0.5mg/ml solution.

I'm glad that Sausage is feeling better and I agree about the Metacam and use with caution warning from Satori.

Glad the metacam is working for Sausage. Penny's been on it now for the last 2.5 years (she'll be 14 on 26th) for her arthritis. The dosage has gradually been increasing until we got to the max. for her ideal weight even when she was over it. Our vet charges £18.60 (not sure of the pence part) & now uses Loxicom (just a different brand - same meds.) as its cheaper than Metacam for them & hence their customers. Interestingly online the price difference can vary either way. I've considered online as we use one bottle about every 40 days. The vet charges £10 (the last time I checked) for a repeat prescription ( I think it would for a 6 month period & I've considered getting it. However the vets now say they will try to match internet prices if they can so I may consider seeing what they say, although another alternative to keep the cost down maybe to get them to let me have more than 1 bottle at a time as their dispensing charge is per time rather than volume so I'd save one dispensing charge if I could have 2 bottles at once.
The vet & I are always looking at other alternatives to keep the dosage down. Penny is also on a prescription powder for her arhtritis, Nutraquin. That's around £28 for 3 months or so supply. However I seem to remember that Sausage's problems are injury related so not sure if that is relevant.
I do watch the dosage & Penny's health to try & minimise any risks of being on this medicine and endorse the other cautions Satori & Ajax made.

Hope sausage soon feels better, pleased to hear the metacam is working for him. Do you have to have regular checks on his kidneys with taking the metacam long term?

Do vets charge for making up a prescription? Hope Sausage feels better soon. Ours charge a fee but I think its per prescription rather than per item in that prescription. Unlike like chemists who charge humans per item. Also they don't charge for flea treatments or wormers.

Oh right Thanks. What sort of of prices do they charge? Sorry this is slightly off topic?? Its £4 for prescription only meds. covers the prescription, dispensing, packaging, labelling. I might be wrong about not being about per item but I think that's what I was told but doesn't say either way on their website.
