Once again, good video for pet keepers, however it should state the species in question and pictured in the video; many people will assume this relates to any gecko species which of course is certainly not true. Geckos come from all over the world with a variety of requirements, again thermostatic control should not be avoided, no heatmat should be used without one.

When I lived in Malaysia I used to have geckos that lived behind the posters in my room and they ran along outside the apartment, doesn't that count as being an owner lol

I did name the one who was always behind my Eric cantons poster stumpy for obvious reasons. And Godzilla was the one my mum named that jumped on her chest one day in the bathroom, her screams nearly shattered every window in the apartment block!

Hi kizzy92, Thanks for your feedback on our videos. Our information on our website for gecko care does outline that a thermostat should be used to monitor the temperatures inside the tank. We advise anyone looking into getting a gecko as a pet to read through our care sections so that they are fully aware of the responsibilites involved and all the essentials they will need. Please let us know if there's any other important tips that you are aware of as a gecko owner yourself. Many thanks

Thank you for your reply, however, your information does not state this at all unless I am reading it incorrectly. You start off by saying 'the RSPCA recommends... *size of enclosure*...' this in my opinion is misleading that the rest of the care sheet is also what they recommend. A thermostat does not monitor temperatures, it controls it. A thermometer does the monitoring which you outline well. The words used are as follows; 'It is important to regularly check the temperature of your gecko's vivarium as the wrong temperature (too high or too low) can cause serious health problems. You may wish to purchase a thermostat to monitor this and keep the vivarium at the correct temperature' The RSPCA states; 'A thermostatically controlled heat pad should be provided under a third to a half of the floor of the enclosure at one end of the vivarium, to allow the geckos to choose between the cooler and warmer areas' You have said how dangerous it is and then implied that the thermostat (of an extra £25 for mat stats) should you wish to buy it (which we all know misinformed people will decide against having to fork out an extra £25 for something they haven't been told is necessary). Now I'm not saying the RSPCA care sheet is by any means perfect, they're not at the pinnacle of reptile keeping however the fact they state that a thermostat should be used IMO is respectable. Just an extra point although not to do with geckos, you may wish to change the recommendations on the bearded dragon care sheet also;
The temperature in your bearded dragon's vivarium should range from 28°C in the coolest areas, with areas up to 40°C in places during daylight hours. Night time temperatures in the vivarium should be around 20°C. An underfloor heat mat will help to maintain the ideal environment temperature while a suspended spot lamp, on for 8-12 hours per day depending on the time of year, will also be needed for basking. Place thermometers at either end of the vivarium to ensure that you are able to maintain the correct temperature.
Again, no thermostat mentioned; this appears however to be said on the corn snake care sheet which I recall said as above a few weeks back (as I mentioned in my post on the corn snake thread) so it seems someone has changed this recently. The beardie has however not been changed and the above is IMO not a safe method, a heat mat is completely unnecessary.
I do not mean to come across as rude or a 'know it all' I just know the damage the forum world has caused and causes reptiles and keepers. As a keeper myself I try and practise good husbandry and feel it disappointing to read incorrect care sheets and information being given out misinforming people who will start off reptile keeping on the wrong foot. We have enough reptile shops in the UK causing the exact same damage, if we can go against this to create a better life for our animals and an easier life for ourselves, it feels it is in our best interest to do so.
