I just read online that there is a place called Gigrin Farm in Rhayader Mid Wales that organisers a Red Kite Feeding Station. It's 61 miles from where I live and I would love to see it. The farm owners charge £7 per adult and at 2pm every day they put out meat for the birds. Ravens, Crows etc. come down to feed first, then Buzzards and finally the Red Kites. The Feeding Station only shuts for Christmas. The RSPB approached the farm owners about organising a feeding station when they found out that the current owner's late father used to feed them. They wanted it set up to have an impact on the young kites that were being lost over the winter and to stop people disturbing the nesting sites. It is now a feeding station for the Red Kites and also a Rehabilitation Centre. on Flickr on Flickr I must go there sometime this year. Its brilliant, worth every penny. Many years since I have been there.
We get Red Kites locally, easy to mistake with buzzard at quick glance.
The forked tail really is distinguishing feature, though in my opinion buzzards have rounder more compact wings.

It's the first time I've used it for ages scallywag, in fact it took me a bit to remember how it all worked.

We took Kobi for a walk yesterday and saw a Jay fly across in front of us, followed by 3 more. I don't see them very often so that was a treat. Then, later on hubby called me into the garden to see a bird of prey to see if I knew what it was. We often see Buzzards and Sparrowhawks but this one was larger than a Buzzard and had a forked tail. I looked through our bird books and I think it was a Kite. I was watching it gliding for ages and then 2 more joined it. I couldn't see any white underneath, which Red Kites have, but reading online it states that sometimes the bird can look grey against a grey sky. Whatever they were I feel honoured to have seen them. Gillykat would know for sure but she's not on the forum anymore. Now that you're back on the forum please comment on this post @gillykat. I would like your opinion.

Definitely sounds like a Red Kite They're spreading around the UK pretty well nowadays and even reaching the Ingram Valley which is 13 miles north of me (tho' I've yet to see one). If I want to see them I have to pop down to Gateshead as they've established a good colony there. I think there's a place just like Gigrin Farm in Dumfries & Galloway too where they feed them.

Thank you @gillykat. I haven't seen them since but I'm hoping they will settle in this area.

Got home from work yesterday and my tyre pressure gauge warning light was on. This morning I have flat tyre! I had to put up with evil hubby bringing me to work in rush hour traffic. I can't believe I have a second puncture in 3 weeks. Hopefully it's a repairable puncture this time.
