Well riley's first walk was quite a challenge,he is fine on the leash and will walk on the grass but for some reason he does not like the path(concrete) we tried to coax him with some treats but he wasn't really sure,so hubby picked him up and we took him into the field at th back of our house,he was fine sniffing around on the grass he just wouldn't go on the path. I realise it is a big wide world out their for him with new sounds all around and it will just take a little time, but if any one has got some tips they would be well appreciated.

I was going to say don't worry about it yet!! Try not to make a big deal of it otherwise Riley may think it should be something to be scared of. You may find the next walk he ignores the concrete and just walks on it.
First walks are always a bit like that, always throws something you don't expect.
You should have seen my mums dogs first walk, she was totally scared of her own shadow etc. Totally threw us as we had carried her around the place etc before she could walk so had exposed her to sights and sounds of the big world!!
Do you have any patio / path area in your garden or perhaps a friends garden? You may be able to play games then with a toy in a fun way which may help.
Sometimes it is best to stand on / against / near the object that is causing a problem and just wait. Don't do anything particularly and just let the dog assess the situation, sometimes they then decide its not scary and will join you / start using their noses and other senses to investigate it.
I know you will have but have you checked his paws to check there is not anything that may be uncomfortable on a hard surface like a slightly long toe nail?
Hope this helps, sorry its not much.
I will put my thinking cap on!!

I was going to suggest playing games to make it exciting but Caz beat me to it It could also be that the path is hard on his pads, puppies have very (adorable and smooshy) soft pads so it might just be that its a bit rough on them. Also is there grit down near you? It could be that its irritating or uncomfortable on his feet. We got Jasper at 5 and he would only walk on the pavement! He soon learnt that going on the grass and mud tracks led to lots of fun and free running!

Don't worry Riley may just be getting used to the surroundings and he may not be used to path? Have you got a path in your garden like Caz said? On the next walk you could just sit on the path, next to grass with a toy or treats and just let him decide whether he wants to join you or not, keep talking to him so that he is reassured through the 'training' session Good luck, I know its not much!

Thanx guys, i might try taking one of his favourite toys next time. My hubby took him this morning and said he was a little better,he just let him sniff around and let riley take the lead on where he wanted to go.he seemed a little happier when he returned today.

Well everyone beat me to it. So I will just say take it slow and enjoy walks in different places and each week Riley will get a little more confident and be happy to explore a little more. Just don't worry and enjoy.x

Well Riley's walk was better today,He walked all the way down the pavement to the bottom of our road and all the way back,i just let him have a good sniff around but he seemed much happier today he was even wagging his tail, the only thing was it was very windy out side so he wasn't too keen on that but he did seem to enjoy it more today although he still won't walk down the drive but like Charlotte stated it may be quite rough for his little pads at the moment. :)He is now flaked out on the sofa.

Is the drive gravel? Cooper hates our gravel drive way and takes the long way round on the brick boarder!!!

Yeah it will just take time.Cooper will walk on it if he has to but very slowly as it must hurt his feet. He will try and find a way round it if he can.

Hi Chantel,
We took Lotty on at the beginning of December and she was very much like Riley, terrible on the lead, nervous of crossing footbridges and other stuff, it was a strange new world. Now she is one of the most playful puppies out on the walk - this will change as she gets older.
So don't worry about Riley and don't force him into something he is unsure about, let him work it out for himself - he'll get there and you'll have the most fun dog ever.

Well riley is doing really well on the lead now and even seems to be enjoying his walkies. We walked him around to my mum in laws yesterday to introduce him to their westy called eric he thought it was great they chased one another around the garden for ages. The only problem was i noticed a couple of little blisters on his back paw but it dosn't seem to be bothering him.it was only a short walk but he hasn't walked that far before,i suppose that is paws will have to get used to it. So i just took him a little walk in the field today when i returned from work.
We have booked riley in for puppy classes but they couldn't fit him in until june but i think it would be really good for him,he has got bags of energy but i couldn't imagine my life without him now and itis so different having a boy i have always had bitches in the past.

Sounds like your both having fun and enjoying your walks now. I'm sure you kinow this but don't over do the walks while Riley is still young and growing. I think we need more photos of his cuteness by the way?!?
