There is no way I would have allowed a child of mine to go into that house, let alone have a sleep over. The mother has said she was afraid of the dogs and couldn't control them, and neighbours were worried about them but didn't report them.So it really seems the dogs wouldn't have had any exercise being too powerful to control. It's a case of wrong dogs in the wrong hands. Jeremy Vine was his annoying self today on same topic. He appears to know diddly squat about dogs, and really riles people with his comments. One lady spoke a lot of sense about the importance of all breeds being socialised, and a policeman told how they were held back and some policemen bitten by standard poodles which are very loyal and protective of owners,as Jeremy kept banging on about hearing nothing about Poodles attacking people.I recommend listening to both days programmes. But I warn you you will be ranting at J.V.

Al, The American bull mastiff, bull mastiff and 2 SBT were destroyed. One other dog was on property but was locked elsewhere so could not have taken part in the attack.
Dog owner is now in hiding due to threats to her.

I agree that the number of dogs is immaterial but watching the news, the house did seem rather small so maybe not the best environment. I also agree that its completely the fault of the owner...their house...their dogs!! Four powerful dogs and technically a stranger entering their territory without the owner present...just asking for trouble!! This article makes for very interesting reading - www.ryanomeara.com/fatal-dog-attacks/

Did anyone see 'This morning' This morning?!? I didn't catch it all but what I did see made me have a shouting fit at the screen. Not sure for certain who the two people were but the lady I think, her daughter was killed by two Rottweilers about 20 years ago and didn't think households should have more than 2 dogs and never more than 1 large breed dog. And not sure about the man but he said something that we had discussed on the old YD forum. I think I was in discussion with john or cumbria or both and was talking about dog licenses coming back, I thought that if they did, it would only work if the money from the licenses was put back in to monitor dogs on the streets. And that was what he said, apparently there was a independent survey carried out and they said if you had to pay £20 for a dog license per dog each year the money would pay for dog wardens to get back on the streets and catch all the people who don't get one. I've always said you have to fund dog wardens to start patrolling again. It's the only way you are going to catch people. And you could also target trouble spots. I'm guessing this would also work well once the microchipping comes in in 2016. But not sure how on spot fines would work???

Microchipping isn't going to make a jot of a difference with regards to 'dangerous dogs'. It's another law put in place without much thought behind it.

People need to remember that dogs ancestry is the wolf - do recall the TV programme about the Wolfman, who has a pack of wolves in Devon (I think) and has to treat the wolves with due respect when entering their pen (territory) or face being savaged. To leave a stranger with a pack of dogs, no matter what size, is a dangerous thing to do.

I didn't mean just microchipping will stop dangerous dogs but if you combine that with dog licenses and putting dog wardens back on the street with the power to actually do something, then maybe we are at least heading in the correct direction.

Well, personally, I think that it is surely the owners (and partly parents) fault, not the girls and not the dogs! I think it is okay to have more than 3 large dogs in one house providing they are under control at all times including when out on walks, or meeting strangers, etc, that they are well-exercised and live in a big house so that they have space to relax and feel comfortable, a BIG garden or yard with a tall and strong fencing lined and that they are always supervised with children, strangers, new dogs or other animals and so on! I think the owner was very irresponsible with trusting the dogs with a complete stranger (a child as well, they would of known that they were stronger than her and therefore pack/wolf instincts kick in). Like Longhope and I said in earlier posts people need to remember that dogs are pack animals, they will always be wild and have their natural instincts no matter how well-trained and tamed they are! Her parent was even more irresponsible for allowing her child to be in that unruly environment. I agree with sarahound, the dogs shouldn't of been put down before the story was discovered. They could of at least been enclosed in kennels or something until further notice, even if it were at the police station or something you know what I mean. I personally think it is damn right wrong. I know it isn't true but for all we know the dogs could have been bred to fight and turned on the girl thinking they were doing right, it wouldn't of been their fault there but yet again they still would of been put down? - wrong. Gladys; I agree, it would be a start! Something needs to be done because this is just getting worse and worse, also the dog thefts all over the country! It is happening in both the North East (mainly Sunderland) and down South (all over South), it is mainly gundogs, Cocker Spaniel especially that are 'going missing' - in other words being stolen by good for nothing low lifes! Caz, thanks for confirming the breeds! I personally still think that more investigation should be made to this story because something just isn't right, it just doesn't make sense! To me it doesn't anyway, because I really honestly believe that it isn't the dogs fault, because surely her parent(s) and the owner should of had more common sense to have thought to supervise the dogs and child or at least keep the dogs away!
