Lunchtime today I found a lump under Roman's jaw, it was like a little polyp & a beigey brown colour. Tried to clean it but nothing coming off, he wasn't too bothered. Wasn't sure what it was so booked a vet appointment for this evening.
In the meantime had a think about it & wondered if it was a tick as I've never seen them for real but he's never had them before & neither have the others. I realised he was due his flea treatment this week and I double checked as he is the only one on Advocate as he had a bald spot earlier this year which was put down to developing an allergy to Frontline.
So had to keep him in this afternoon as having checked it out he decided it was time to stir from his daily slumber in the summerhouse. I don't think he appreciated it as that's when it decided to warm up!
Got to the vets a few minutes before our 17:10 appointment (they only open at 17:00 but the vet arrived after me - I suspect he was delayed at one of the other branches) & we were seen around 17:40. The vet was very pleasant & yes I was correct it was a tick which was removed. The vet checked Roman's fur all over including rolling him on his side & inspecting his stomach. No others thank goodness. He said Roman was a very amenable boy, which he was only the odd whimper like miaow occasionally, he also commented on Roman being a big cat but he was very happy with his condition as he could feel the ribs but just enough. I got him weighed - 5.4 Kg.
The vet also explained how to remove ticks just in case he got any more & we discussed the best prevention for Roman. Between us we've decided not to use Frontline as once he's had an allergic reaction its likely that he would again & it can be worse. However as I've got a similar product Fiprocat (same active ingredient - fipronil) we've decided to give it a try with Roman & see if he does react to it.
Typical I've just bought 6 months worth of Advocate!! - Still I can use the Fiprocat during the summer tick season & save the Advocate for the winter!!
Will just keep an eye on the site of the tick as there is still a lump there but the tick was defiitley removed completely.
