Oh not good news cazypops, is this still the same leg from a few weeks back? Why Monday? Have I missed something here ? Hope it gets sorted soon Yes scallywag it's still the same problem. Monday was the first available slot we could get. God I hope it gets sorted soon, I'm starting to really worry about him now. I can't get my head around that for a young fit dog a small tumble while playing in the river could cause all this. Dogs are more fragile than us and I got a very painful knee (causing me to struggle not to limp) simply after some jumping in and out of the paddling pool which was sat on a hard pavement in the garden. Its unfortunate but individual bodies can be hurt easily. Don't let it worry you to much, you have a vet and vets do all they can to help pets like Jasper in a bad situation. The vets are there whenever you need them. I wish you two the best of luck for Monday. Keep calm and give Jasper a cuddle x

Thanks BorderTerrier, I'm only worried as the vet thought it was a fractured toe, but now he's not sure either and can't find anything by examining him. He's no obvious pain and no swelling, we're all baffled.

Well Jasper had his Xrays today, and its not good new. It seems he has a partially dislocated hip. Because of this the bones have been rubbing and the ball joint is all rough now. Apparently it's not uncommon in Parson/Jack Russells Terriers. We now have three options:- 1) He has hip replacement surgery, at a cost of £4000, and If he'd been insured this is what would be done. Unfortunately he's not insured. 2) He has surgery to remove the ball joint and this can be successful but not always. 3) He has an injection in his hip and tablets for the next 5 days. Then an injection once a week for the next couple of months, then once a year. This is to reduce the roughness on the bone and hopefully make his life more comfortable. We don't know if when he fell in the river caused this, the vet says its possible he could have had it since birth. We're going to see how he gets on with the jabs first and if this doesn't help then he will be having the hip replacement. I'll find the money somehow.

Poor jasper, that is a very difficult decision cazypops. Have they offered the option of amputating the leg, and would that be a route that you would be willing to go down?

Thats only as a very last resort, and usually in respect of option 2. I'd rather go for the hip replacement as long as they can guarantee that he'll have a normal live after. Forgot to say, that he can't have any long walks now. No more that 15 minutes at a time and on lead only. No chasing balls or sticks, thats the bit thats upsetting me the most, as he's only 1 year old.

Oh cazypops that's awful We're all here for you and jasper Hope he's not too down! Will he be able to have long walks after the treatment or is it indefinite? I would go down the same route as you are Also did you get him from a breeder? If so it could be worth letting them know that it might be an issue, they may have had others with the same problem. Big hugs from me and jasper poodle

Thanks all. If it hadn't been for a limp that wouldn't go away you'd never know anything was wrong. At the moment he's still getting over the anesthetic, so he's just sleeping on my knee. As for the length of inactivity I'm not sure, but certainly for the foreseeable. We got him from a so called breeder on the internet. It wasn't a puppy farm just a young lad who bread to make a few quid, not the best of starts I must say on hindsight, but they did look cared for. He'd had their tails docked at a couple of days old but not had them injected. He said he like to keep in touch with all the owners but I've never heard anything from him since to see how Jasper is getting on.
