So glad you are taking Mickey with you to the vets. I think seeing him will help the vets, especially if the]have seen him fairly recently. He looks lovely in that photo. Hope all goes well at the appointment. Fingers crossed.

Oh I'm sorry to read that. Did the vet say whether it was advanced? I know from experience that Mickey will let you know when he's had enough, and wants to go to sleep at rainbow bridge. My thought are with you at this sad time. Sending you big HUGS!

Thanks guys. cazypops - the vet was quite short (and blunt) with me, which I didn't appreciate all that much. He didn't say how advanced though, but he said there were quite a few lumps. He doesn't know for sure if they're tumours and, for that matter, if cancerous, but when I asked him how sure he was he said "well I'm just going by all my years of experience" That was our thought, that we'd know when he was ready, for now he's picked up a bit in the last couple of days and is spending most of his time outdoors again. We're giving him a bit of time to see how he is, I couldn't stand to think that he was quite happy with his life and we put him to sleep too early. He's had antibiotics and (steroids) anti-inflammatory and the vet said he might eat more and bulk up a bit, but that it's delaying the inevitable. We'll see, for now

Oh my Pawsforthought how sad for you all, I hate vets like that, that's why when I go, I ask for the kind one, she takes into account your feelings as well as your pet. Sending Mickey a great big {{{HUG}}} and lots of Not forgetting you to

I am so very sorry to hear that Pawsforthought. As you say it is his quality of life. I hope the anti biotics, steroids and anti inflames. help him and he continues to enjoy his days out doors. Thinking of you.

I'm so sorry to hear the news Pawsforthought. Lets hope the medicines give Mickey an improvement in his quality of life, which they do seem to be doing. Its a difficult time but you'll know when (or if) you have to make that final decision.
Take care.

Guys, all your comments and support have been really helpful He's still going. He is having to be hand fed on occasion, but I think that's more his sense of smell not being all that great any more. He ate a whole bowl of chicken today. His poos are nice and solid, so he hasn't had to have prokolin for a while. He's finding it hard to walk, but he is currently sunbathing and he manages to get out of the garden and be gone for hours on occasion! I think it's near his time, but we'd all rather he passed away in his sleep at home than go to the vets, which he hates more than anything, and be put to sleep on a table with some drugs...if you know what I mean? I think the vet was really not the best he could have been, and I've been reflecting on him now that I'm not quite so emotional. I'm quite annoyed, actually, the way he made me feel was that I'd be a cruel person/owner not to put him down, and I don't think it's a vet's place to say anything like that. He kept going on and on and pressuring me... I think we've made the best decision for Mickey. He stretches out on the grass, lays just fine etc. Doesn't seem to wince or flinch when touched or when moving. He just takes his time and we've given him lots of attention and comfortable, snuggly blankets to lay on. He loves laying outside under the bench in the shade. Yesterday he laid with me for hours on my old dressing gown-

He looks gorgeous there and I'm sure he's much happier to lay there than an examination table at the vets. It's fairly hard to find vets that are doing it for the animals any more. He had no right to try to force you into deciding that. Sounds like he was looking for more money.

It brought tears to my eyes reading your post i still miss my girls like crazy and even though it is 14 months since i lost phoebe it only feels like yesterday.
You did the right thing bringing him home if he is in no pain it is better for him to be with his loved ones i only wish that i had that option.
Thinking of you both lol xx
