Osiris had his 6 month check up on Tuesday. His teeth need cleaning but as he is borderline kidney disease the vet went through the risks especially as he is 13. It boils down to comfort versus risks. The vet has recommended what when he goes in they put him on fluids before the op. as if Osiris had a problem & they had to inject adrenalin then this would be passed through the system more easily. I subsequently thought about getting blood tested as he needs to be sedated to take it. I spoke to the animal care assistant yesterday & she'll refer it to a vet so all the paperwork is right before I have to sign it when he goes in Friday morning. Just not sure if having the fluids before the op will affect the blood tests or if they'll need to take them before the fluids or they would be better on another day. He's already in (early for him) & had no food since 10 pm so he's not impressed. Just hope he doesn't hide in the morning before I can get him in his carrier! Until the vets actual do the dental they won't know if he needs any teeth removed, there's nothing obvious but removing the tartar may expose a problem. Fingers crossed not. The vet I saw was the same one who saw Roman & was very thorough in his explanation of risks & ways to reduce them but I don't think he'll be the one who'll do the dental as he seems to be based at the main hospital - 20 minutes away by car, (which was the only place I could get an early morning appointment for his check-up - saves the aggravation of keeping Osiris in when he expects to go out if its later!) but the op will be done at the branch which is only 5 minutes away from me. Could be an interesting bill never mind having to protect the floor around the litter tray for when he comes back & needs to stay in until he's fully recovered - he's litter trained but since he taken to going out as much he doesn't like using them (even pristine & different litters tried). He obvisously knows what they're for, he just uses the mat by the tray - I must make sure there are no pin-prick holes in the mats & use more than one - anyone think I've been caught out before!

Even before he went to the vets Osiris expressed his displeasure at being in & no food after 10 pm. I've been keeping Roman in (another story) from his (late) dinner until I get Osiris in around 10:20 -11 pm as a result the litter tray Roman normally uses in our bathroom is moved downstairs to the dining room for those few hours of Roman incarceration. Last night Osiris was in around 9:45 pm but when I took the litter tray back to the bathroom around midnight I discovered that Osiris had obviously needed one (Roman will use others) & there was a wet patch on the floor! Easily cleaned up luckily. This morning no more such disasters just a large furball to clear up in the bedroom, by the colour no doubt that it was Osiris's. Took him to the vets just after 8:30 a.m. - he wasn't happy about it - & found the blood tests were on the list of things to be done. then at 10:45 I got a phone call from the vet saying that Osiris was being very awkward about the blood test, they were even having difficulty shaving him & was I OK with him being sedated. He's always been sedated for the tests in the past which is why I suggested doing it when doing the op. so was a bit surprised. It appears that they wanted to do the test to make sure he was OK to do the op. & also he'd need shaving for the fluids. So just waiting to hear how things have gone (should be contacted between 2 & 3 pm) & when I can pick him up. Once I know if he's had teeth out & if so whether that means he will need keeping in over more days than today then I'll do a fresh litter tray for him with the appropriate amount of litter for his incarceration time. He does come back a bit wobbly

Osiris & I both say thanks for the well wishes.
Being him/me the day didn't go quite as smoothly as it could. By 3:20 I hadn't heard anything so I rang the vets - so I rang again all the branches are answered at the main hospital. They checked the computer system & the notes weren't there yet but they spoke to the branch he was at & everything had gone OK & he was recovering well but they'd sent the bloods to the main hospital for a 2nd test so were waiting for those results. I should hear in about 1/2 hour. An hour went by so another call & the hospital would chase the results & ring me as soon as possible. Another hour & I rang again! This time he was ready to come home, the bloods were Ok but the head vet wanted to see him in a week's time. Now that confused me.
Went to pick him up & paid the larger than expected bill - but then this morning the one who booked him in wasn't sure if it had been originally costed with or without the pre-op IV fluids - it was listed but not costed!!! The nurse this evening explained that the head vet couldn't match the blood results with what he was seeing hence see Osiris next week.
They actually offered me an itemised bill which I've never had from them before & I can see his comment So he's booked in for 9:20 am next Friday at the main hospital as that is where the head vet is rostered that day. Not a problem as its still only 20 minutes away (instead of 5 for the local!)
I've got a printout of the results & I'll match them against the previous 2 he's had this evening as I seem to remember there might have been some flags from before (or I could be remembering Roman's!) but at least his renal indicators are within the norm, albeit maybe close to the range limits.
Osiris's wobbly, vocal & wants out, which will not happen until tomorrow. when I picked him up his voice was a little deeper & raspier but still strong! It's improving. He's had a little chicken which he swallowed no problem, if that's stayed down (it was 1/2 hour or so ago) then I've (over)cooked some rice along with some fresh chicken so he can have a little of that & then some more around 8:30 with a pouch of food.
Not sure there's going to be any paint left on the dining room door he can definitely stand on his hind legs & paw at it by the sound I just heard when dealing with the rice & chicken!
Off to keep him company until 8- 8:30 ish when I'll do all the dinners (including mine) & get Roman & Lexie in for the night so Osiris can have the run of the house albeit not out until the morning.

Hope the anemia isn't too serious, and there is something that can be done if needs be. Glad his dental work hasn't done him any harm by the sounds of it.

Thanks everyone, he's been surprising calm this evening, yes he wants out & I've had to clear a poo which was on the litter mat rather than the in the litter tray but he's eaten all his chicken (& most of the rice) but not the cat food! Oh & a little of the beef from my salad dinner for which he waited patiently - sorry Osiris its back to normal in the morning cat food with just some chicken with breakfast laced with the Metacam for his arthritis & again as a treat for coming in at night - I hope! No medication or diagnosis for the anaemia until at least next Friday, not sure what the vet wants to do then. It was a bit difficult to ask for a vets input as they'd just had an emergency come in - the vet & a nurse were in the car park having to help someone get their largish dog from the back seat of a car straight into the surgery. They'd taken out a stretcher but in the end they were able to carry the dog in once manoeuvred it out the car. I hope it turned out OK. On closer inspection of the blood results I'm not sure I got the final test as it was timed at 12:20 & I think that was the local branch's test, so will go in on Monday to see if I've got the latest that the head vet had seen.

Osiris is fine thanks chantel, he's been out & is now complaining that its wet outside & he's perhaps feeling a bit sorry for himself still, but he's been a good boy, no litter tray accidents overnight He spent a fair amount of the night on the bed with me, which is often the case. Roman was there initially but got off when Osiris got up as per normal! Although Roman has been standing up to Osiris more of late, just like his younger self As to me I had some weird dreams but then that's nothing unusual!

How complicated all of the results for Osiris are tonib. The vets don't make anything easy to understand. You must have been so worried with all the delays each time you phoned them. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon. Glad that Osiris is eating okay. Shame he's got to go back to the vet again on Friday. I hope the anaemia is easily treatable.

Thanks everyone for Osiris & my good wishes How complicated all of the results for Osiris are tonib . The vets don't make anything easy to understand. You must have been so worried with all the delays each time you phoned them. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon. Glad that Osiris is eating okay. Shame he's got to go back to the vet again on Friday. I hope the anaemia is easily treatable. Luckily the delay for the first news was nothing unusual, its when I get an early one that I worry. It was only the wait for the blood tests that were an issue but at least I knew that he had recovered from the op. Having seen the blood results I can see why there were delays in there analysis. The vet I'll be seeing on Friday is one I trust, he's got a wry sense of humour I we get on well, besides a vet he's a medical ethicist & I think that also helps as with Penny he worked with us to give her quality of life rather than a less pragmatic approach pushing ways to give a longer life which stressed her out. No good worrying I'll just have to wait & see what's to happen next. If they want to take more bloods at least he won't need to be shaved
