I was away last week so the cats were in the cattery & were gad to be home in Sunday & being able to go out. On Wednesday I'd been out in the morning & came back to find Roman snoozing happily on the living-room windowsill cushion. I was only back briefly (or so I intended) just to take the washing out the machine to dry. When that was done (5-10 minutes) I discovered he'd gone out. So as I went to the car I kept an eye open for him. there he was at the bottom of next doors drive just on the (muddy) edge of their flowerbed. Then I realised he looked decidedly scruffy, tufts of fur sticking out & he was very cautiously moving away from the road (those with cats will recognise that very, very slow walk) & a realised that there was Buster (a black bruiser from a couple of doors down) doing the same in the opposite direction. I suspect a case of territory being reclaimed/defended after roman's absence.
Roman wasn't coming in with me but went round to the back & came in that way. I realised he was without his collar so rescued that from the flowerbed. The fact that was off confirmed my opinion that the 2 had been fighting. Roman didn't want my attention but he got it & I found a scratched & slightly bleeding edge of an ear, a wet side of his face/neck some disturbed fur on a front leg & muddy paws as well as the tufts. The tufts were around the neck so could have been from the collar coming off.
I cleaned, under protest from Roman, the injuries I could see & as he wasn't limping etc. didn't keep him in but he decided to take himself to bed where he stayed for the rest of the day & night. Only getting out to have his tea & supper, have a drink all of which were in my bedroom & to use a litter tray. I think he was feeling down in the dumps after getting duffed up, its happened before but at 14 +?) he not getting any younger although to be fair nor is the other cat who is roughly the same age!
He came down for breakfast & jumped up on the worktop to "help" get his food quicker as normal & then went to lay on the windowsill cushion again. I took opportunity to check him over & clean his ear again & also saw signs of a cat bite near it. He wasn't happy but let me do that. I noticed that one hind paw still had what looked like mud on it so went to clean that & then Roman became decidedly upset when I touched it hissing & pulling away - most unlike him - with other sounds of pain, now don't think it wasn't mud but dried blood. OK vet booked for that afternoon & Roman kept in.
The vet found nothing to worry about until she got to that paw when he protested loudly but only threatening trouble not actually doing it. I held him on to the examination table whilst she examined it. Poor boy squashed down on to the table She found nothing worrying but he's broken his claw which is causing him pain & his toe is slightly swollen.
Result Antibiotics for 7 days along with Loxicom/Metacam for the same period & to be kept until they are finished & we've see the vet again! Roman hates me & if his eyes could have thrown the daggers he was looking at me with I'd be dead! But luckily takes his medicine OK in fact licks the Loxicom syringe clean He's not limping & only showing signs of pain when his toe is touched.
Poor boy just out of the cattery (or does he consider that prison rather than a holiday?) & back in prison again! He's limited to my dining-room conservatory combination during the day but overnight hasa the roam of the house - the only way to allow the others the freedom. Although yesterday (being so cold) Osiris kept him company during the day with odd visits from Lexie, today Lexie is with him & Osiris is either out on or my bed.
Fingers crossed it clears up soon as he won't let me examine his toe to see what's happened, although the daggers have gone from his eyes.
