I've been having problems with Kiba-Khan. I have 2 litter trays in the cat shed out in the pen and noticed that the newspaper underneath them was often wet. I assumed they were leaking so bought 2 new ones! In the house last week I heard Kiba-Khan having a wee in the litter tray - he sounds like a fountain and goes on and on!. I know he's a big cat but I just don't know how he can wee and poo so much! Anyhow, when I went over by the litter tray I noticed the paper underneath was wet - he had missed and my carpet was soaking too!! I took ages to clean it. Hubby got a large tray from the greenhouse and we put paper in this and then the litter tray. Thankfully it worked. Kiba-Khan missed the tray again this morning and the newspaper in the underneath tray was soaked through. I don't know why he's doing this.

Do you think he's having trouble getting properly into the tray lotsofcats? If so it could be pain issues, possibly arthritis. Of course he could just be protesting about something. If it was Osiris I'd know the reason since he's braved the wide world (he was an mainly indoor cat before he came into the rescue) in his mind the litter tray marks the area of litter mat or carpet to use but he must not use the tray itself! Luckily he normally doesn't use a tray indoor only if he's being kept in - don't think the cattery are impressed though With Penny it was arthritis & then latter stress/effect of the CKD but once these were managed it was OK again.

I was wondering if it's the type of litter. Recently I changed back to silica litter when I thought that the wood pellet type of litter was making Kiba-Khan cough. Since then he has coughed again so I'm alternating wood pellet litter and silica litter in the house. There was wood pellet litter both times he has missed in the house. I've changed it now to silica litter so I shall see what happens. I always use wood pellet litter in the cat shed. I hadn't though of arthritis - he will be 12 in February so I should expect these things.

Kiba-Khan has been a good boy and hasn't missed the litter tray since I changed back to the silica litter in the house, so I assume he doesn't like the feel of the wood chip cat litter. I afford to use it in the cat pen too so I will have to find a large tray to put the outside litter trays on and hope he's okay.

Glad you found a simple reason to the problem lotsofcats, although not necessarily a good solution financially. Aren't cats picky, luckily Roman is happy using pellet (albeit currently paper rather than wood but doesn't mind either) & clay clumping. Lexie uses the clumping, admittedly a different one to Roman but that's just how it's worked out. Osiris doesn't care - he won't use a litter tray Normally he hangs on over night but this morning I found that someone (probably Osiris) had poo'd (if you call something that was almost liquid a poo) in the bath. At least it was easily cleanable!!!! I think I'd better put another litter tray in the bathroom with a large good litter mat underneath.

Naughty Osiris - at least it was in the bath and like you said, easily cleanable. Toffee hates a litter tray too.

No accidents last night - the additional litter tray was used but I suspect by Roman. I think he came to tell me several times early this morning (the 1st time around 5 a.m. !!) Most unlike him, at least unless I get up to go to the toilet in which case he often comes with me & then gets on the bed on/with me for a short while. He normally only joins me much later if I haven't got up
