Can anyone recommend a good safe spray on detangler for long haired kitty’s I’ve been away and safe to say kitty sitter (dad) hasn’t combed Bella out whilst I’ve been away & now she’s got five big knots on each side just think it’ll be unfair to her to go wading in with the furminator straight away

I've never tried any sprays for the cats. I'm having problems with Blackberry at the moment, she has a large knot on her chest and other small ones - I brush all the cats every morning and masses of fur comes out and it's showing no sign of stopping. Blackberry and Willow still have their fluffy manes. The only cats without any knots are Kali, Toffee and Kai Ruki.

I know lotsofcats I normally comb her out twice a week hate the idea of using a spray but feel so sorry for her with this heat as well & she’s due her flu jab so there’s me disappearing for a week combing her out & flu jab she’s so going to hate me 😢

Yes you are correct scallywag they do go towards the body so can only imagine very uncomfortable will have to cut the knots out the try & comb the rest god knows where she’s been to keep cool picked out loads of burs 🤦🏻♀️

molly9 we've got shorthaired cats so no real experience but when Osiris (for some reason - possibly a touch of arthritis) got some mats, a while back, at the base of his tail I had no choice but to cut them off, it was easier & quicker (when he stayed still).

Do you have a slicker brush? I'm not a cat person so ignore me if this isn't helpful haha, I don't know if it would work the same as it does for dogs Just noticed that you said about using a furminator and to me that doesn't seem like the best kind of brush to get knots out. I've sometimes left grooming Alfie for longer than I should have and have never had a problem as the slicker brush gets through any tangles easily. If they're really bad and a brush won't get through on it's own, could you try a mat splitter?

I'm going to look up a slicker brush and a mat splitter to see if they can help with Blackberry's knots. I noticed last night that Bramble's fur has quite a number of knots so I'll have to get those sorted out. Bella won't be amused with the grooming and a visit to the vet molly9.

I had a persian who hated her bottom half of the body brushed or combed. Head, shoulders, back, sides upto waist was fine. So I gave up trying to groom those areas and cut mats out with scissors. Later on I discovered that talcum powder helps separate mats so you can brush through more easily. I used tea tree oil powder for pets and if mats weren’t too bad, it worked.

If nothing works and you don't want to cut them off, you can let the vet's assistant do it when you go there. Too much brushing will stimulate the grow, says my vet.
